Το μετάξι ήταν το κύριο συστατικό αυτού του εκτεταμένου εμπορίου, που είχε την έδρα του στην Κίνα και την Ινδία, φτάνοντας σε όλες τις μεγάλες πόλεις και πολιτισμούς του κόσμου, μέχρι τη Ρωμαϊκή Αυτοκρατορία, τη Μεσόγειο, την Αραβική χερσόνησο και τις βόρειες ακτές της Αφρικής.
